Description Jo 2014-03-07 10:46:51 UTC
Hi,
i wrote in a previous post that my wakom bamboo zoom wheel/touch ring does not work. Now this works only partially.
Gimp registers when i use a mouse or a tablet:

when i use the mouse, i'm able to zoom in or out with the touch ring, but when i approach the tablet using the pen, the touch ring SHUTS OFF.
This is a -huge- problem for me, zooming is very important anyway.

In theory, everything is working fine - Gimp registers the touch ring, but not in combination with the pen. Please help-i'm using Gimp always a decade and this Problem wasn't there in older versions (2.6 if i remember correctly)

In the advanced input device options (Gimp>Preferences) offers no much, except the option to choose the Screen mode for our Pointer, Cursor, Eraser, Pen, who is the only one reasonable option one can set, lapidary said.
The mouse wheel option for Quartz Pen seems de-activated and impossible to configure. But scrolling with the pen works in lists (of brushes, palettes, ect.)
Usually, scrolling in combo with keyboard keys would help me to perform important actions, like:

 # in/decrease brush opacity
 # in/decrease brush radius
 # rotate brush angle
 # flip canvas
 # zoom image
 # previous/next brush

Its a real handicap who needs a solution. Because performing these actions using the keyboard breaks the natural work speed.
This bug is quite annoying-after all, this bug involves how the user interacts with his most important-expressive tools to work with Gimp.
Maybe some news about this error?

Probably related to bug 685784.

-seems- not. Ive no touch-tablet device, but an older wacom bamboo sensible to pen pressure only. I do not expect that gimp works with high-end devices, but primarily with simple ones as i have. Maybe the bug in question is a duplicate, but i cant say it, because not involved as developer.

sorry to bother with this bug, but the description (scrolling with the wheel) and comment 1 (scrolling with the pen)
explains it very well why this bug is so important to fix.
…maybe you managed already to fix this bug in the new Gimp build ?

more info:
whenever i paint a stroke in Gimp, i get following error message on the Console (error log app on Mac):

21.11.14 01:12:04,012 [0x0-0x72ae2a7].de.lisanet.gimp: (gimp-2.8:81212): Gimp-Tools-CRITICAL **: gimp_tool_cursor_update: assertion `gimp_tool_control_is_active (tool->control) == FALSE' failed

All the time, or only when you are painting a stroke and in the same time are zooming with the touch ring (which was originally what this ticket was about)?

sorry if i can follow you only partially.
in my description i wrote:
"when i use the mouse, i'm able to zoom in or out with the touch ring, but when
i approach the tablet using the pen, the touch ring SHUTS OFF"

which means i cant zoom at all -using the touch ring- when i draw with the pen.
I always ignored what my Mac os error log application said, but i think that every bit of info can help to get solve the problems related to this bug.

to answer a part of your question: every time i paint a stroke, i get an error message in the Mac os own Console. Which wonders me, because my wacom driver is up to date, and a pen stroke should not be recognized as an error.

i followed an older tutorial of Lisanet where she explains we need to map the zoom buttons "view-zoom-in-accel" , "view-zoom-out-accel" respectively to ctrl & +, ctrl & - for a working zoom wheel on wacom tablets.
Unfortunately, this trick doesn't work anymore- the hint is several years old.
Comment 9 Jehan 2014-12-19 22:41:10 UTC
I have made some tests. They pertain to Linux, so I am not fully sure how similar to OSX it will be, which probably explains the differences of behavior.

In my case, I can use the zoom wheel when the pen is close to the tablet, but not when I am in the middle of a stroke (so the pen *touches* the tablet), which makes some sense, I guess (you wouldn't zoom while drawing). So that part is maybe a Mac OS-specific issue (if someone else can confirm?).

This said, the whole zooming with a tablet is very messy in GIMP. On Linux at least, it just never works by default (as far as I experienced). You basically have to map the ring events to +/- (or whatever other shortcut you set your zoom to). This said, this may also be the way tablets are managed in Linux which may be the problem. We have definitely things to improve.

But for your specific issue, I guess I'll let someone with OSX fix the problem.

thanks for the repy, Jehan. I confirm, the touch ring works differently on Mac.
I dont know how much developer has already elaborated this bug, so my informations can or cannot be helpful:
To start with a trace, i would check if input devices are correctly set, because these settings control how the zoom wheel behave.

Cant think of a creative working yet nowadays with a mouse to paint …tablets arent more expensive as in the past.

The tablet can be seen as an essential hardware component of Gimp. Therefore, we need a proper solution to solve this bug. Gimp deals with imput devices, however theres space for improvement.
Comment 12 Jo 2015-08-13 13:00:03 UTC
the touch ring of tablets seems to work only in mouse mode.

1) move the mouse
2) zoom using the touch ring on your tablet only -zoom is on-
3) approach the tablet with the pen and try again to use the touch ring -zoom is off-

is this bug related to older wakom drivers only or the new tablets/drivers too?
