Comment 1 darkxst 2014-01-30 00:25:30 UTC
I hit this semi-regularly, but mainly when launching gnome-shell from a VT, over SSH, gdb etc. I don't think I have seen it when running shell from within gnome-terminal on the current X session.

Also this is with the NVIDIA blob.
Comment 2 aslamK 2014-01-31 22:19:35 UTC
Nvidia is present in my case also, and this happens with nvidia-304 as well as nvidia-331.

However, this is a new occurrence. I had been running gnome-shell 3.10 on Ubuntu 13.10, w/ nvidia-331, and hadn't seen this issue until a couple of days ago. It happens consistently as soon as I login -- it's not the user-switching scenario for which others have reported this issue, the system has only one user and I am logging in locally.

Tracing back my apt history, the issue most likely appeared after the following update:
=====
Start-Date: 2014-01-28  18:56:23
Commandline: apt-get -V upgrade
Upgrade: mysql-server-core-5.5:amd64 (5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.1, 5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.2), libpangoxft-1.0-0:amd64 (1.36.0-1ubuntu1~saucy1, 1.36.1-0ubuntu1~saucy1), mysql-client-core-5.5:amd64 (5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.1, 5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.2), libpango1.0-dev:amd64 (1.36.0-1ubuntu1~saucy1, 1.36.1-0ubuntu1~saucy1), libpango-1.0-0:amd64 (1.36.0-1ubuntu1~saucy1, 1.36.1-0ubuntu1~saucy1), gir1.2-pango-1.0:amd64 (1.36.0-1ubuntu1~saucy1, 1.36.1-0ubuntu1~saucy1), libpangocairo-1.0-0:amd64 (1.36.0-1ubuntu1~saucy1, 1.36.1-0ubuntu1~saucy1), libpangoft2-1.0-0:amd64 (1.36.0-1ubuntu1~saucy1, 1.36.1-0ubuntu1~saucy1), mysql-common:amd64 (5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.1, 5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.2), libmysqlclient18:amd64 (5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.1, 5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.2), libpango1.0-0:amd64 (1.36.0-1ubuntu1~saucy1, 1.36.1-0ubuntu1~saucy1)
End-Date: 2014-01-28  18:57:11
=====
I simulated reversing the libpangoxft-1.0 update and saw that it would trigger _lots_ of uninstalls, so I didn't reverse it. I can't therefore confirm that the issue resulted from the update.

Gnome remains unusable on the system in question.
Comment 3 André Klapper 2021-06-10 11:18:42 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version of cogl, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/cogl/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
