Description Bill 2014-01-28 03:39:04 UTC
I'm just trying out the new version of Pitivi that appeared in the fedora repos today (0.92). I tried importing a .ts file. I believe this is encoded using 4cc mpeg & audio mp2 (At least that is what Avidemux claims it is - handbrake just says its mpeg2 video). So avidemux & handbrake recognise it but Pitivi does not. Pitivi displays a music icon and then crashes when I try to import it. Current workaround is to transcode the file to a different format using avidemux or handbrake. Then I can import it ok into Pitivi.

The source of the file is a direct recording from an Xcruiser satellite receiver onto an external USB disk. As far as I know the satellite receiver doesn't transcode the recording just basically stores whatever was transmitted by the satellite.

So is there any way to get Pitivi to directly import this type of file. Maybe I need to install some other package or plugin?

Hi! There have been some fixes made for MPEG-TS in the git version (you can try it out if you're curious, it's not going to be any worse than 0.92, only better ;) but I don't know if those will cover your file.

Would you be able to record a very short sample (ex: one or two secs) that fits within a 1 MB filesize to attach to this bug report? (or if you have a web server to upload it to...)

Not sure what the minimum recording time is for the receiver. Will see what I can do when I get home. If it is too big for an attachment I could load it into a dropbox folder and share a link for it.

Ok. The Xcruiser seems to insist on recording a minimum of three minutes. I have uploaded a sample to dropbox. Link below:

One curious thing I found. If I open the original file in avidemux and save the file telling avidemux to copy the original video & audio codecs (no transcoding) but tell it to ouput as mpeg-ts container, then pitivi will recognise the resulting clip.

Right, this is a problem with GStreamer then - the gst discoverer just says "Internal data stream error." with that file. Totem can't play it either.

Just in case, mirrored it here:

Fails with "No program activated before EOS", which gives a hint what's wrong with these files I guess.

Doesn't play in VLC, but plays in mpv.
