Description Sergio Benjamim 2014-01-25 17:02:45 UTC
When you try to pick an icon for your custom item menu in Alacarte, it forgets to put .png or .svg in Desktop Entry file name, so in Unity or others menus the item menu icon does not appear.

Example: Try to create an Nvidia Settings item menu (after install bumblebee)

1. Open Alacarte
2. Click in "System Settings" and click in "New Item"
3. Name: "Nvidia Settings", Command: "optirun -b none nvidia-settings -c :8", and Icon: /usr/share/pixmaps/nvidia-319-updates-settings.png
4. Try to find in Unity, there is the entry, but no icon
5. Open ~/.local/share/applications/alacarte-made.desktop
6. Then in the Icon Entry: Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/nvidia-319-updates-settings

So, if I change Icon Entry to Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/nvidia-319-updates-settings.png , and logout and login, the icon item menu works fine.

I has this problem with Scilab too, or any other that I need to pick an icon for item menu.

I reported this bug here too: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alacarte/+bug/1260846

I also saw this bug all along Gnome/alacarte 3.10. I always had to manually edit the desktop files when changing an icon to add the extension. Now, after upgrading Gnome to 3.12, this issue has disappeared in my case, alacarte includes both png and svg extensions after changing an icon file.
Comment 4 André Klapper 2021-05-25 17:45:02 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new enhancement request ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/alacarte/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
