Description st 2014-01-23 14:37:13 UTC
the dialog doesn't provide ability to trust or import a self signed ssl certificate.

the dialog shows only an error message, then quits but the account is not added.

I don't think that is the case. The dialog shows an error message and then offers you an "Ignore" button to carry on regardless. What error message are you seeing? Can I have a screenshot?

Would it be possible to have a toy account on your server for debugging?

This worked fine when I tried it on Fedora 21, although it took me ages to see the Ignore button.
