GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 722802
dark theme does not work with gtk2 apps
Last modified: 2014-03-11 15:14:02 UTC
gtk2 is still used by several applications for example: - chromium/chrome - firefox - eclipse - geany - qt apps in general dark theme works for gtk3 apps but not for gtk2
Glad to see this bug was already reported! I really love the Global Dark Theme option with Adwaita but this bug is quite annoying I have to admit! Is there a workaround in the meantime ? I can help in testing if need be, just let me know! Thx Eric
Yes, I'm wondering why this bug report hasn't been created earlier??? Anyway: Please fix it! Doesn't make such a nice impression for newbies either if the desktop experience is quite inconsistent ;-) Thanks, Paul
I really wonder why this very important and annoying bug has yet to be confirmed??? Is there another place to report Gnome bugs like this one? How does it work? It would be great to have a developer's opinion on this bug please. I found nice workarounds for Firefox and Thunderbird, I suggest to use the following themes : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ft-deepdark/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/tt-deepdark/
Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 708538 ***
Thank you for your prompt reply, sorry I missed this other bug.

Window content gets dark, but the frame remains grayish :-(
@Paul You are right, I did not realize this since I use the Maximus Gnome shell extension : https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/354/maximus/ The first part of the workaround in the duplicate bug takes care of the dark frame. It is an ugly hack and you should make a backup copy of gtk.css beforehand in case you want to go back to the original... The work-around is to copy the "gtk-dark.css" to "gtk.css" in "/usr/share/themes/Adwaita/gtk-3.0/". Restart your session and voilà, dark window frames all around! Do not forget this will not survive a theme update...
