GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 721688
Metacity doesn't work well with wine emulator - fullscreen broken for many applications
Last modified: 2021-07-05 13:52:48 UTC
Window manager warning: Window 0x3c00007 (ePSXe - En) sets an MWM hint indicating it isn't resizable, but sets min size 1 x 1 and max size 2147483647 x 2147483647; this doesn't make much sense. This metacity bug has been around and known since 2006: http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2006-July/049323.html Especially gnome experience is badly affected due to this bug, many wine games and regular games has fullscreen problem with metacity. As can be seen here in the video: Openbox, Kwin, XFWM4 - work as expected but Metacity fails. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TIKd4jNqU4&feature=youtu.be or download HD quality: (11M) https://www.dropbox.com/s/rcu90t3r99h3uke/metacity-wine-bug.mkv In the video, the fullscreen works perfectly with openbox, kwin and xfwm4, the recording software records the screen at 1440x900 hence the fullscreen change is not visible in the video! but we can see broken / half fullscreen of metacity. Please consider, as wine and other games need proper fullscreen support like most window managers like openbox etc.
Age of empires: Conqueror's Expansion, the top bar/task bar remains visible on fullscreen switch in metacity and keyboard shortcuts are also not working properly in the fullscreen. Here's Youtube video AoC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZ7uQ-cBn7U&feature=youtu.be HD 1440x900 quality video 5.6M: https://www.dropbox.com/s/gpb53ag7gptfmfy/metacity-wine-aoc.mkv
Created attachment 265527 [details] activities bar is visible in gnome shell
GNOME Shell does not use metacity, but mutter. This is old bug and might be already fixed (I don't know...). GNOME Shell / Mutter developers will know better.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
