The changes to AM_PYTHON_CHECK_VERSION implemented in JD_PYTHON_CHECK_VERSION where committed to automake in

so could have appeared in automake version 1.10.2, but I think actually appeared in 1.11. pygobject currently requires 1.11.1, so AM_PYTHON_CHECK_VERSION and JD_PYTHON_CHECK_VERSION are identical.
