Sorry, don't want to annoy you, Cheese works great.
I have a USB micrsocope (duh) and a zoom feature would be immensely useful fo capturing fine detail. Is that possible?

This would be possible if Cheese could change the low-level V4L controls of the video device. It is unlikely to happen soon, but there is an open bug report about exposing those controls in Cheese.
