Description chris 2013-12-19 07:45:20 UTC
Its impossible to follow the caret if an application outputs behind the active window.

Reproduce
1 run gnome-terminal for example
2 Ping google.de (to produce an output)
3 open firefox or thunderbird
4 in my case open thunderbird and try to write a mail ;).

result -> it alwas jump to the position with the gnome-terminal output

expect -> i can write an Mail and the Focus follows me
Comment 1 chris 2013-12-19 22:15:55 UTC
This also happens with the audioplayer qoudlibet.
in fedora
sudo yum install qoudlibet

if the audioplayer is the active window and an gnome-terminal is in background, the focus evertime flips to terminalcursor if output appears.
Comment 2 chris 2013-12-19 22:18:30 UTC
Oh sorry, i musspelled the name of the audioplayer... WRONG qoudlibet -> CORRECT quodlibet
sudo yum install quodlibet.noarch
Comment 3 Magdalen Berns (irc magpie) 2013-12-22 22:42:48 UTC
You can fix this in the terminal window if you deselect 'scroll on output' from the scrolling section of 'profile preferences'

I am not sure about the error you have with audio player but see how you find things with scroll on output disabled and let us know how you get on if you can please, thanks.
Comment 4 chris 2014-01-16 16:20:11 UTC
But i wanna have the "Scroll on output" feature. But i just want it if the window is the active one and not in the back of an other window.

Good point. I think this sound reasonable and doable. I will look into it.
Comment 6 chris 2014-08-04 12:30:39 UTC
i have to correct myself.
this always happens if gnome-termianl is running in background. the foreground programm doesnt matter. this not only happens if thunderbird or firefox is open in foreground.

Reproduce
0 Enable Mag with Focus Tracking
1 run gnome-terminal for example
2 Ping google.de (to produce an output)
3 open ANY Programm
4 Focus the in 3. opend programm and toggle it into fullscreen
5 navigate arround in the programm you opend in 3

result -> it alwas jump to the position with the gnome-terminal output (this also happens if gnome-terminal is on a other desktop)

expect ->the Focus follows me
Comment 7 chris 2014-12-15 21:27:28 UTC
this also happens if the gnome-terminal is on an other virtual desktop
Comment 8 GNOME Infrastructure Team 2021-07-05 14:04:08 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
