GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 720461
Activity overview animation slow
Last modified: 2021-07-05 14:47:42 UTC
Hello all, I have just started to use gnome-shell. I was previously using Gnome classic with compiz. I am running debian unstable. All animations were very smooth without any lag (change workspace, all window overview...) I have trouble with the responsiveness and smoothness of animation in the activity overview. Switching to the overview (super), rezooming to a window, dragging a window in another workspace, switching workspace (ctr+alt+down) is lagging. It does not make gnome-shell unusable but it is irritating and it is one of the main reason I still prefer gnome classic with compiz. I know that my configuration is not the best but it was running well with compiz. Intel GMA 4500HD (and ATI but switched off by a script) Genuine Intel® CPU U4100 @ 1.30GHz × 2 GLXgears gives 60fps (55 when playing with the activity overview) With monitor system, cpus are at 10% and goes to 50% when playing with activities. Thanks, Jean
Hi, I have the same problem here. Tested on these gc: -hd3450 mobility -hd5450 mobility -hd6950 desktop -hd4850 desktop -hd5750 desktop Laptops was using a weak 2 duo cpu intel and the desktops was using amd fx cpu. All these computers were a lot smoother on pantheon (elementary desktop) even on the overview. Everything is smooth, except the overview in gnome shell. I really think gnome shell overview is heavily cpu limited. Turning cpu to performance mod on all computers help to get higher fps. On the other hand my laptop with i7 4700hq is smooth as butter on the overview. I will run some tests in the next days. Thanks, Loïc Désirest
This still seems to be an issue in gnome-shell 3.26.2. gnome-shell's CPU usage doubles while in overview, which is a curiously large increase of an already large CPU footprint.
Maybe my previous comment belongs in bug 683204. Although the description of this bug makes it sound like this one might end up being a duplicate of that one.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
