Description Charles Lindsay 2013-11-25 21:53:44 UTC

---- Reported by shotwell-maint@gnome.bugs 2011-05-24 01:55:00 -0700 ----

Original Redmine bug id: 3650
Original URL: http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/3650
Searchable id: yorba-bug-3650
Original author: Craig Barnes
Original description:

As a total philistine who cares very little for the mantra of “never delete
the originals†and who would like to save some disk/Picasa space, I was just
wondering if WebP support in Shotwell manager/viewer is currently under
consideration.

I know it's probably quite low priority at the moment but I just wanted to put
this out there anyway.

It depends what you mean by “support.â€

Any video format that your system recognizes via mime type **should** be
recognized by Shotwell. However, we don't currently support timestamps of WebP
videos.

Oops sorry, I was thinking WebM, not WebP (who picks these names?!)

Currently we'd need a Gnome library to interpret these images. But it's
possible we'll add this at some point.

I'm also interested in WebP format. I may be available to collaborate hacking
and testing it.

Here is something interesting:

I'd like to see the priority of this feature increased? .

When converting my photos to WEBP I see about a 60% savings on space with no noticeable affect on image quality. I'm quite impressed! I'd like to convert my entire library and be able keep more photos locally.

I suspect cameras will eventually use this format instead of JPEG.

Postpone to 0.30, needs gexiv that depends on exiv2 0.26 (most likely 0.12) for proper webp support in exiv2
