---- Reported by eric@yorba.org 2012-09-11 15:04:00 -0700 ----

Original Redmine bug id: 5801
Original URL: http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/5801
Searchable id: yorba-bug-5801
Original author: Eric Gregory
Original description:

Geary checks for new mail whenever it's running. Some people find this can be
distracting, particularly when a lot of mail is coming in.

What would be useful is a way to "pause" this, i.e. put the client into
offline mode (#3767) without pulling the ethernet cable out of the back of
your computer. Thunderbird has this feature (File->Offline->Work offline)
though many other clients do not.

Concept terminology stolen from here:

actually-relax-or-get-things-done

Since this would be an app-wide state, an appropriate way to expose this feature would be as a toggle-able app-menu item: "[ ] Pause" or similar, but if someone accidentally pauses the app, it may not be obvious how to resume it. To make it obvious, a MainWindow-wide InfoBar could be displayed when paused and that has a Resume button.

Out of curiosity, what is the distracting part of being online? Is it notifications? New messages showing up in the inbox? Both? Something else?

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/geary/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
