GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 712653
Please add a shortcut to compensate for removed "commander" mode
Last modified: 2013-11-20 11:17:42 UTC
Dear Nautilus devs, in releases prior to nautilus 3.8 it was possible to switch to a view mode that I will refer to as "commander" mode (a la norton commander, midnight commander, gnome commander, etc.) by pressing F3. In this view mode, two directories were displayed side-by-side in one nautilus window allowing to easily compare the contents of two directories and moving and copying files back and forth between them. For whatever reasons this view mode has been removed and I have read elsewhere that opening a new nautilus window with Ctrl-N and arranging both nautilus windows to the left and right side of the screen by means of gnome-shell's window tiling capabilities is meant to compensate for the loss of this feature. While I agree that this arrangement is very practical, it is cumbersome having to manually open a new nautilus window and use the mouse to arrange the windows to each side of the screen. I thus ask you to reintroduce the F3 shortcut in a way that does this automatically, i.e. open a new nautilus window that is arranged to one edge of the screen and occupies half of the screen area. Alternatively, it would be nice if nautilus could show two new tabs in one window side-by-side instead of one covering the other - but then I guess we are back to reintroducing the "commander" view mode and I believe you had good reasons to remove it, although I never understood why. Best regards, Fabian
Hello, Fabian. Thanks for the bug report. What you propose is indeed a good idea and was even in the roadmap for version 3.8 at some point, as mentioned in bug 681004 comment 12. Unfortunately, there has been no more work on this feature for some time; it needs someone to pick it up again. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 681004 ***
