Cannot type in message without mouse click

Using the Super+M keyboard shortcut to open the messages tray and then using arrow keys and <enter> to select a chat I cannot send a message without using the mouse to activate the typing field.
Alt+Tab works for selecting the empathy window (and the typing field is automatically selected) but not all chats have chat windows (e.g. if a chat is responded to with a notification (Super+N))
I would like to submit a bug to fix that so chats in the messages/notifications tray can be interacted with without the need for the mouse.
See screenshot for an example
