Description Mikel Ward 2002-02-12 03:31:29 UTC
I have a central gdm server and a few low-end PCs configured to act as X
terminals. The X terminals start X then query the gdm server to log in.

I would like to have an option on the gdmlogin system menu to shutdown the
local machine, as presently this is much more cumbersome, and can only be
accomplished by:
- creating an X session and adding it to the sessions menu (then the user
would still need to log in)
- creating a user that runs some sort of remote sh/ssh command
- switching to a virtual console, logging in, and shutting down (if one has
the facility to have virtual consoles)

I would really just like a simple menu option so that ordinary computer
users that use this system are encouraged to shutdown the local machine.

I filed bug 71238 as a possible way to do this (add menu item to execute
arbitrary command from system menu).

tcurtis: need /what/ info?

Actually this is very hard. We have no cooperation from the "local"
machine since there's only X there. Perhaps when gdm gets the ability
to also manage X terminals as such, there could be an XDMCP protocol
extension that would do this or something similar.

I am closing this bug and adding a comment to bug 71238 that this would be a useful feature of arbitrary system menu commands.
