GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 712308
Double click on parent account doesn't open the register - new behaviour not documented
Last modified: 2018-06-29 23:21:29 UTC
I was using a recent 2.5.x version of Gnucash, and I noticed when I double click on a parent account in the Accounts window, it doesn't open the register view for that account. Instead it collapses or uncollapses the rows for the child accounts. I was a bit surprised, as I was expecting to be taken to the register page to enter transactions to that account. This happens for both placeholder and non-placeholder accounts, and I think it is different from the double-click behavior in 2.4.13.
IIRC this change is intended. The underlying assumption is that in most cases parent accounts are used as placeholders and are not used directly to enter transactions. I think there was even some debate on whether this should only be enabled for true placeholder accounts, but from a user's point of view that would very confusing. There's no visual difference between a parent account that is marked as a placeholder and one that isn't. So it would appear inconsistent to the user if a double click on one opens the account in a register while a double click on the other merely expands or collapses its children list. Note that you can still open such a parent account via the menu, tool bar button or right-click. It's just not the default action anymore for parent accounts. What is missing is documentation for this change in behaviour, so I'll reassign this bug to the documentation component.
On an unrelated note: I see you have added yourself to the cc list of this bug after you created it. That's not necessary. As a reporter of the bug you will receive mails automatically each time the bug is updated. Adding yourself to the cc list if you are the bug reporter doesn't do anything :)
I wanted them to be included in my saved search "Bugs I am CC'd on." Now I have created a new saved search "Bugs I reported or am CC'd on" so I won't do it again :)

Now I have > created a new saved search "Bugs I reported or am CC'd on" so I won't do it > again :) Hmm, I hadn't thought of that use case. I just thought you wanted to be sure to receive e-mails for your bugs. Have you also tried the standard "My Bugs" report ? It seems to do what you want as well with some added structuring. It's just a suggestion.

I've updated the documentation in trunk. Changes are in rev. 23614 If there are no comments, I will close this bug in the coming days. Thanks for reporting!

I have removed bug 721026 as duplicate as the current implementation still has room for improvement. Cristian: your patch cleanly describes the current situation IMO. Thanks!
Thanks Geert for the feedback. I close this bug.
