Patch

This defies the whole idea of not encouraging users to overwrite their files. Also if you don't pay attention and click "Enter" quick after ctrl-e, you may overwrite your original file by mistake! (hence losing data)

The default export filename the last URI, or based on the saved URI, or finally "Untitled", not the import source.

Also if the user wants to overwrite, there is already the file-overwrite action to use for such a workflow.

I use that feature all the time, please discuss this with Peter, there
must be some other way to improve this, like using "sourcename-1.png"
pr something.

Hi Mitch,

Yes I was anyway expecting asking it. I've just sent him an email, with the dev ml in copy.
"sourcename-1.png" would suits me fine too (it is maybe even better). As long as it does not propose you to overwrite the original, it is good for me.

When you say you use the feature all the time, then wouldn't it make sense to use file-overwrite instead? (only 1 step, instead of ctrl-s Enter Enter)
Comment 3 Michael Natterer 2013-11-13 09:17:23 UTC
Since overwrite has no keyboard shortcut, I never use it. And since I
know how to navigate the file system, I have never overwritten a source
image, at least not AFAIK ;)

Anyway Peter's answer:

«
please don’t.

there is two reasons that I am against tampering with this:

1) when using Export As... (new label), there are 3 things that
can be changed:

the location (say, directory), the name, the file type (extension)

2 out of 3 times, the name does not need changing.

2) the same ‘danger’ exists for Save As... but I think
we all manage quite well with that one.

So closing as INVALID since none of the changes proposed (neither Untitled.png nor sourcename-1.png) were ok to Peter.
