GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 711426
Unable to set Miscellaneous compatibility options in gnome-control-center keyboard in GNOME 3.10
Last modified: 2014-01-20 10:15:45 UTC
In Ubuntu 12.04 (GNOME 3.4.2) I was able to set Miscellaneous compatibility options in gnome-control-center keyboard (for example, I use "Shift with numeric keypad keys works as in MS Windows"). Here is a list of all missed feautures: * Allow breaking grabs with keyboard actions (warning: security risk) * Apple Aluminium Keyboard: emulate PC keys (Print, Scroll Lock, Pause, Num Lock) * Both Shift-Keys together activate Caps Lock, one Shift-Keys deativates * Both Shift-Keys together toggle Caps Lock * Both Shift-Keys together toggle ShiftLock * Default numeric keypad keys * Enable extra typographic characters * Numeric keypad keys always enter digits (as in Mac OS) * Shift cancels Caps Lock * Shift does not cancel Num Lock, chooses 3rd level instead * Shift with numeric keypad keys works as in MS Windows * Special keys (Ctrl+Alt+<key>) handled in a server * Toggle PointerKeys with Shift + NumLock In Ubuntu 13.10 (GNOME 3.6.3) I can't set them from gnome-control-center. Please bring this options back to the gnome-control-center. They are very useful. IMHO Gnome-tweak-tool is not right place for them.
GNOME 3.6 is a year old. You'd best see about using GNOME 3.10 (available in Ubuntu GNOME I hear) or file a bug with your distribution.
I can confirm that any of these options are not available in gnome-control-center 3.10 (package 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu1~saucy2 from LP-PPA-gnome3-team-gnome3-staging/saucy). I'm not sure about "Enable extra typographic characters": if you mean entering special characters with AltGr key, you can set and change it to any other key in 3.10. @Bastien, should Norbert fill a new bugreport or reopen this one?

(In reply to comment #2) > @Bastien, should Norbert fill a new bugreport or reopen this one? Since we disagree on the premise, no, there's no need to file a new bug or reopen this one.
I installed latest GNOME 3.10 from Ubuntu ppa. The problem exists in it too. So I reopen a bug. IMHO: GNOME is not Mac OS X with its stupidity/simplicty design. What do you think? I think, that your users are not fools and idiots. Users need ability to change settings "Miscellaneous compatibility options" from not-far-hidden place. Gnome-tweak-tool is not right place for it, I repeat. All new laptops has numeric keypad in right side. Users may want to set this option - "Shift with numeric keypad keys works as in MS Windows" from default installed GUI. Is it clear for you?
(In reply to comment #4) > All new laptops has numeric keypad in right side. Users may want to set this > option - "Shift with numeric keypad keys works as in MS Windows" from default > installed GUI. I'm not sure I understand. You mean that there are laptops shipping with keyboard layouts that we don't support? If you have a specific bug to report please do so by filing a new bug with detailed information.
No, Rui. >You mean that there are laptops shipping with keyboard layouts that we don't support? I do not mean this. The problem is missed compatibility option. If NumLock LED is off Shift+Number produces number, but with option "Shift with numeric keypad keys works as in MS Windows" it works in another way (as Shift+ Home, End, Pg Up, Pg Dn with dependence on key). This way is more comfortable for me. That is all.
Created attachment 266708 [details] [review] A patch for most problems Please, when saying "we disagree" to a user, briefly explain your decision; although you don't plan to follow more discussion about the topic. In other way; this means decisions are not been taken for representing the community but, although it has been contrasted, the way of seeing the world of a few only.
