GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 710662
App menu "move" option is confusing and ill-placed
Last modified: 2013-10-23 21:51:26 UTC
The "Move" option in the application menu is rather confusing. The current behavior is: * If you have no tiles on the left side of the board, nothing happens. * If you have a tile on one of the outer squares of the left side of the board and you try to "Move" in that direction, nothing happens. * Otherwise, all tiles on the left side of the board move one square in the direction you selected. If a move is not possible in a given direction, the option to move in that direction ought to be insensitive. Additionally, since this is a game control, it should be exposed in the window rather than in the application menu. However, Bug #710614 proposes allowing the player to place pieces on incorrect squares. If that were allowed, "Move" might no longer be necessary at all.
When I tried to use this feature, it didn't seem to have any effect. What's the motivation for the Move option? Accessibility?
It has been there for 10+ years so it predates any of the current maintainers. I suppose it is for keyboard-only mode or something. I am not against removing it.
"Move" only works when all the squares on one edge of the board are empty (and only in the corresponding direction). I'm not sure what I was thinking when I wrote this. It's indeed never necessary. We can probably simply remove it from the app menu and leave it as a keyboard shortcut only.
