in my ~/.gnome/session file, it automatically launches panel every time I start X.  But for some
reason, panel has stopped working.  I can't think
of any change I made between logins between now
panel no longer works at all.  I can't launch it normally from an xterm window either.  Everytime it runs, it dies with a seg fault here:

but panel always worked before.  suddenly stopped 
working.

I've tried to remove old panel config files in
case any were corrupted but that has not helped
perhaps an old panel config file is needed but is
now missing . . . ?
