Description Mehmet Giritli 2013-10-14 11:29:29 UTC
I use gentoo and this problem was reported by me to the gentoo bugzilla.
But devs over there could not really figure out what the problem is,
hence this email.

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=487496

Recently I upgraded from 0.9.8.4 to 0.9.8.6 and as a result I can not
use NM at all. The problem is that I can not add a profile (clicking Add
in the add profile window has no effect) or even connect to a wireless
network. I can see my devices and wifi APs but turning them on or
selecting APs has no effect.

I tried removing the /etc/NetworkManager dir entirely but it had no
effect.

I've been using nm for a long time and this is the first time I am
facing such a problem. Here are the logs I have:

Installing non-newest versions is a trivial task with gentoo:

emerge -av =net-misc/networkmanager-0.9.8.4

Also, the bad thing is that you are comparing NetworkManager 0.9.8.4 with some configuration and Networkmanager 0.9.8.6 with removed configuration. I don't say it is a problem, just that you have to expect to get different results.

I already posted some comments to specific log lines to the mailing lists:

> Oct 12 12:56:24 mordor NetworkManager[13390]: Error parsing file
> '/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf': No such file or directory

This is non-fatal, afaik.

> Oct 12 12:56:24 mordor NetworkManager[13390]: Error parsing file
> '/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf': No such file or directory

Should be non-fatal as well (but should be reported as there's no need to read the file twice nor to report the error twice. I wonder whether that happens with git master.

> Oct 12 12:56:24 mordor NetworkManager[13390]: keyfile:
> parsing .keep_net-misc_networkmanager-0 ...

Non-fatal, but NetworkManager shouldn't IMO read that file.

> Oct 12 12:56:24 mordor NetworkManager[13390]: Error parsing file
> '/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf': No such file or directory

Duplicate once again, non-fatal.

Now NetworkManager is ready! It has no connections, though, according to the logs.

A desktopy behavior of adding a default auto wired configuration at runtime...

Looks OK.

Sounds like the auto-generated connection fails to provide correct settings. please file a bug report for that with http://bugzilla.gnome.org/ and don't forget to specify the version of NetworkManager there. Please link it with the Gentoo bug in both directions. The rest are just consequences of the problem noted here.
Comment 2 Pavel Simerda 2013-10-14 13:50:21 UTC
It would have been a bit more useful to file bug reports for the specific problems I pointed out.

My friend, I'm not asking you how to use portage here. I'm obviously having problems running, not installing, NM.

Well, I'm not getting different results, I'm getting exactly the same result, which is weird since it used to work with 0.9.8.4. So what I'm asking is, what can I do to make it work with 0.9.8.4 again? Why do I get the problem now (after trying to upgrade) and not before? I already tried removing /etc/NetworkManager completely and let the gentoo emerge install the default (which also answers why I run 0.9.8.4 with some config). But what else could be changed? I need to change back on those things because currently 0.9.8.4 does not run, exhibiting the same problem I'm seeing with 0.9.8.6.
Comment 4 Mehmet Giritli 2013-10-14 15:09:01 UTC
For sake of completeness, I provide NM 0.9.8.4 with no config:

This shows that something has gone badly wrong. That shouldn't be possible.

Do you perhaps have an out-of-date libnm-util.so? (Have you maybe ended up with multiple copies of it on disk somehow?)

Thank you for your input Dan.

find /usr/ -name libnm-util.so
/usr/lib64/libnm-util.so

equery belongs /usr/lib64/libnm-util.so (a gentoo tool for checking which package a file belongs to)

What else can I do to verify that I don't have an out-of-date libnm-util.so?

Could you run 'ldd /usr/sbin/NetworkManager'? It should tell you which exact so files would be used by the dynamic linker.

I'm sorry we couldn't provide any useful help, yet. From the information we have, your previous installation of NetworkManager worked. You might want to double check the library below, but I guess you already did as much as you could.

(In reply to comment #8)
>     libnm-util.so.2 => /usr/lib64/libnm-util.so.2 (0x00007fe9bde56000)

So, my advice is to:

1) Remove NetworkManager (using emerge).
2) Search carefully for any left-over file, especially the noted library and remove them.
3) Install the version that always worked for you (or even an older one).
4) Same as step #2.
5) Try the latest version.

If it's a packaging problem (not very likely), you'll find it and can report it to Gentoo maintainers. If it's a build problem, you might find a way to reliably reproduce it and we could fix it. Maybe Gentoo stores build-time environment variables somewhere? If it's a code problem in a released version, we should know it as well.
Comment 10 Mehmet Giritli 2013-10-20 08:57:32 UTC
Finally fixed it! It was caused by ccache feature when used for compiling. Disabling it compiled a working nm. Thanks all for your help.
