GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 709842
don't show number of unread messages in the sidebar
Last modified: 2013-10-12 22:50:57 UTC
Avoid creating a feeling of information overload. I don't think we should be indicating unseen messages in every channel unless they are direct mentions. Right now the OCD in me wants to click through all just to "clean up" the view.

Created attachment 257068 [details] [review] roomList: Only show unread counter for highlighted messages Indicating every single unread message prominently pushes users to make sure to read up all missed messages, however irrelevant they are to them. Instead, reserve the prominent message counter to highlighted messages, which we can assume to be relevant. While at it, stop using bold labels for rooms with highlighted messages, as the counter is already prominent enough.
Created attachment 257069 [details] [review] roomList: Dim inactive rooms With the counters now indicating unread highlighted messages only, we no longer have any visual distinction between active and inactive rooms. Bring this back, but de-emphasize inactive rooms rather than highlighting active ones.
Sounds like a good idea from a design pov.

Would it be possible to change the color of the icon next to the channel name as well?
