One of the features I really like in Cinnamon is the ability to not only control my system volume but see information about the music I was playing, have the ability to go forward or back or track, and of course to pause a track. You can see a picture of what I'm talking about here when you scroll down to improved sound applet

It looks like they're doing this by monitoring the D-BUS Media Player Remote Interface(http://specifications.freedesktop.org/mpris-spec/latest/).

BTW, I realize there are existing gnome-shell extensions that do this I just feel it offers a much better out of the box user experience if this was built in.
