GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 709130
network indicator do not show wired networking status
Last modified: 2013-09-30 20:11:47 UTC
With the new system menu, the wtatus of the wired network is no longer shown. This is problematic because sometimes, for some reason, the network disconnects, and the user needs feedback on the network status. I have two real use cases for this: * On a desktop computer, sometimes (not frequently) the network disconnects. Even if the ethernet cable was kept connected, if it is connected to a switch but the router was powered down, the connection failed. And because the cabl is detected to be connected, there is no information on when the router is reconnected. For this reason, it might be relevant to show the network icon, at least when the network connection is down. If the connection is up, it might be relevant not to show the icon. * On a laptop computer, if for some reason the ethernet cable is not secured because either the cable or the port is defective, it's easy for the cable to get disconnected. The user then needs feedback on the wired network status. To conclude, I think the wired network icon should be shown, if not always, at least when the connection is not established. This in fact shows the offline status of the computer.
