When updates are present, the button appearance changes until you acknowledge it. For users who are blind, the only way to know there is an update is to press the button and read the resulting screen. It would be nice if the presence of updates were not conveyed only visually. One possibility that springs to my mind is to change the text to include the number of updates, e.g. "Updates (3)". I'm open to other ideas, however.

Yes, we've discussed that (changing the label). This is another good reason to do it.
