Description Oliver Propst 2013-09-17 22:40:10 UTC
gnome-software should implement a system that support user donations.
Comment 1 Richard Hughes 2013-09-19 16:13:45 UTC
I don't think we can inside of the app itself. It's super hard to deal with all the legal compliance things and there's a ton of paperwork involved. Maybe we can ask the user to use flattr or something? Is there something like flattr that's open source?
Comment 2 Allan Day 2013-09-19 16:22:57 UTC
One idea I've had for a while is to have a Flattr-like system. Someone would set up a monthly donation, which would get split between the GNOME Foundation and any applications that you have installed. You could also weight the payments according to how the user rates each application.

There is a legal challenge here, of course, and we'd need to consult the GNOME Foundation Board of Directors for guidance.

I think we should simply allow developers to specify any URL related to donations. That's a simple and easy start. Anything more advanced can come later, of course.

I'd be wary of doing that. It will cause a lot of pain if we start with diversity and then switch to a centralised model later.
Comment 5 Kamil Páral 2013-09-20 13:57:32 UTC
Oh, as I write in the g+ post, I think we should support developer's choice in all cases. If there is some centralized solution integrated into gnome-software (I don't deny that it can have considerable benefits), it should complement the existing solution, not replace it.

Even though I personally like and promote Flattr, I wouldn't be enthusiastic of the idea that Flattr is the only supported way of accepting/giving donations through gnome-software. Or PayPal. Or whatever. One size fits all rarely fits.
Comment 6 Jim Nelson 2013-09-23 19:05:27 UTC
I agree with Kamil. Landing on one solution is probably not going to work. Not only do projects want flexibility, users want flexibility too. For example, Yorba takes three payment methods: Paypal, Bitcoin, and Flattr. Flattr was added by user request.

I'll also point out that "user donations" don't necessarily have to be monetary. People can contribute through translations, code, and documentation, for starters. I would encourage Software to consider allowing projects to specify URLs for these (and other) types of donations as well.

By accident I arrived here, but the idea seems amazing.
It is interesting to facilitate the media to donate to the applications shown in gnome-software, and above all, considered giving the contribution they can make the "user/volunteer developers' to projects. The community building is part of the philosophy of free/opensource software.

Bug 762287 is a proposal to add pay UI support - not sure if this should be considered separate or not.
Comment 10 Richard Hughes 2016-02-23 09:59:49 UTC
I think 762287 will solve this bug too, but this bugs is interesting for discussion.
Comment 11 Oliver Propst 2016-02-23 10:16:08 UTC
