Description iccii 2013-09-09 11:49:18 UTC
Current newest GTK+2 version is 2.24.20 for 2.24 series,
but official download packages for Windows is 2.24.10.
Update the GTK+2 bundle packages for Windows on Website.
There are some problems in several application (*) which uses the old one.

(*) Freeciv: Replace the gtk+ DLLs to newer version

Comment 1 Luis Menina 2013-12-09 14:28:22 UTC
In fact this is even worse: 2.24.10 which has been available since 2012-02-08 (almost 2 years ago) has a massive memory leak on Windows, mostly fixed in 2.24.14 (see bug 685959).

I keep seeing every now and then people on stackoverflow.com falling on it:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10837776/memory-leak-in-gtk-under-windows-7-in-gtk-widget-queue-draw/12950519

The only workaround I could give people was to downgrade to the 2.24.0 bundle, as 2.24.8 and 2.24.10, the only other 2.24.x bundles have the bug.

Tarnyko, I added you to the watchers of this bug as you now have fresh new maintainer-like super-powers :-).
Comment 2 Martyn Russell 2014-01-06 15:32:25 UTC
Tarnyko, can you take care of this one?
Comment 3 Jacob Nevins 2014-09-14 11:06:01 UTC
Is there any prospect of updated official Windows Gtk2 packages being provided?

Our Windows packages of Freeciv are basically unusable for many CJK users due to using this old 2.24.10 package (see link in original report).

For reference : it is very unlikely that I will have the time to do anything GTK+-related personally.

But I would be very happy to assist anyone willing to genuinely take care of this.

Nowadays the advice is to install the native Windows GTK+ packages provided by MSYS2/MINGW-w64, which covers both 2 and 3 (and tracks releases very closely*):

https://www.gtk.org/download/windows.php

I don't believe that there is either a desire or a need to provide packages on the website, and I can attest from personal experience that the MSYS packages work very well.
