Description Desmond Armstrong 2013-09-08 17:34:00 UTC
Every time we boot we find that the icons and panels are duplicated, triplicated quadrupled etc.

While it is easy to remove the excess items each time we open a session.

this problem is limited to the Gnome Classic desktop. The full Gnome 3 diesktop has no problem.

This problem is reported on Ubuntu:-
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/1083811

In my case I am using Mageia 3 and while I can find new versions of Gnome-Panel for Mageia I currently have gnome-panel 3.6.2 2.1.mga3 the system will not allow me to install the later one 3.6.2.1 or 3.6.2.2 (on Mageia 3).

I am also reporting this on bugs.mageia.org bug 11197

...and linked to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=689610. And hence already FIXED in upstream code. Closing as duplicate.

So, for the present, the Classic mode of Gnome is not usable, this is a pity as my users do find that the Classic mode is much more to their liking.

And by the way the Ubuntu report concerns multiple monitors whereas my usage is single monitor on a laptop and the Ubuntu problem does not mention Gnome Classic.

Perhaps I should not have mentioned the Ubuntu problem as I am only concerned with the single screen, but I did think that my application was also a problem of gnome-session, maybe I was wrong.

Either way I am stuck, I have the fully updated Mageia 3 and Gnome Classic remains unusable.

Which exact GNOME version is this about? If it's 3.6 than it's likely a WONTFIX. If it's 3.8 then the report does not make sense. :P

Feel free to ask Mageia to cherry-pick that commit and ship an update to you that includes https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-panel/commit/?id=3bee9c8

GNOME 3.6 has no "Classic" mode. Maybe you refer to "Fallback mode".

Upgrading to GNOME 3.8 might make the problem mood anyway as gnome-panel and fallback mode are not part of the 3.8 anymore. However there is a Classic mode in 3.8 which does NOT use gnome-panel.

Again not sure why this bug report was upstreamed as there is a valid bug report in the Mageia bugtracker.
