Tentative design of the Gnome 3.10 filechooser mockup

Please clean up the 3.10 filechooser layout a bit. The navigation section doesn't need a border and should span the full hight of the dialog. Options like 'Character Encoding' moves to the right below the file list.

Have a look for the attached mockup.

PS: Am I at the right section for this bug report? I couln't find the Bugzilla section for the filechooser bug report?

If I didn't overlook anything, this proposal addresses 3 issues:

   1) Sidebar has a frame.

I also think this this should be fixed. It's both ugly and inconsistent with nautilus.

   2) Sidebar doesn't extend to the bottom of the window

I don't see the problem. It has the same height as the main pane, which is consistent with nautilus. The bottom row is reserved due to this being a modal dialog.

   3) Scrollbars from sidebar and main pane look different

This is not specific to the file chooser. It's determined by the theme, so let's address it there: bug 702468.

No problem, I'm reassigning it to the right place. The file chooser is a component of gtk+.

(@maintainers: I think this is a candidate blocker for bug 679334)

Doesn't look like an improvement to me.

Because it makes the sidebar hand to the bottom like an overlong curtain

It's like with Nautilus, currently. More vertical space, less scrolling and a cleaner look because it's two columns to the eye. Left for Folder or Bookmark selection. To it's right the file list and down below the files the options which are related to the files not the Folders and Boomarks. At least that's how I see it :)
