Here is a way to leave selection mode, but have the checkboxes stick:

1) Enter selection mode
2) keynav to the first clock
3) hit space or enter
4) you get the single-clock view
5) hit the back button
6) you're back in the overview, out of selection mode. The checkbox is still there

nice.

I guess hitting space/enter in selection mode should toggle selection instead of activating the item
