GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 705373
keyword search entry is too narrow
Last modified: 2013-10-07 06:47:25 UTC
The addition of ‚Current‘ and ‚All Books‘ buttons in 3.8 made the keyword search entry too narrow. Typically, the useful width of the search entry seems to be reduced to 1/3 to 1/2 compared to previous versions. Many longer keywords no longer fit unless one increases the width of the entire left bar to unreasonable sizes. The purely decorative looking glass icon and generally useless[*] clear button within the entry do not help either. Please consider moving the buttons where they do not stand in the way, e.g. to the large unused space above (where fw/back buttons lie), and perhaps cutting down the decorations.
(forgotten footnote) [*] After focusing the entry, one just can start typing the new keyword. So the clear button does not really accomplish anything.
The idea is to remove the Current|All buttons all together. Probably a default search in All books is enough, but I still think we would need to specify in the hitlist from which book each keyword is coming.
That would be also fine. For me personally, searching within the current book is not that useful -- usually the string I type into the entry is specific enough (and if it isn't it often I want results from a book different from the current one). Sectioning the symbol list by book might be useful and provide sufficient visual clue, though this may get somewhat convoluted using the Gtk+ treeview.
The [Current][All books] filter buttons got removed in git master; see bug 707608. That should have fixed this issue; so will mark this bug as duplicate of that one. Let us know if you still experience the problem. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 707608 ***
