Description Brendan 2013-07-24 04:43:57 UTC
It would be better if you could select transparent as a color and paint with it rather than having to switch back and forth between the erase and paint tools. Any chance of this?

Thanks

Brendan

Why would this be better?

Brendan, can you bring this enhancement request first to the gimp-user mailing list for a discussion, please?
Thank you in advance.

Sure
Where do I find that list?

You can find it at https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list.

Transparency is not a color, it's a paint mode that could easily be enabled
for most paint tools if we decide that's a good idea.

Bredan invited me by email to give opinion about it.

I think the request made is to can 'color-pick' an eraser color.

As far as I know only Mypaint can do it with the 'pick-context' W feature. This feature can pick 'brush' stroke and data on the canvas, and because eraser stroke in Mypaint are normal strokes with a 'Eraser blending mode' ; you can pick a eraser stroke for real.

Other references and way to erase is the Krita or Mypaint way to toggle switch key to the blending mode 'erase' while painting with 'E' ; the goal is to access erasing with a single toggle key and immediately go back drawing with same key instead of switching as in Gimp , the B (brush) tool and E (eraser) tool and have to set a preset for each before doing the 'E'/'B' dance while drawing. ( a lot of Photoshop artist use that , btw, as Ps is also designed with the 'Tool' paradigm ). Btw, 'Blending mode' Eraser toogle has limit IMO ... If you use a preset with 70% opacity , the generated 'brush with eraser blending mode' also inherit of this opacity.

According to the Gimp design 'tool based' with splitted B (brush) tool and E (eraser) tool ( and not a unified 'stroke' mode ) , I don't think it's a wise decision to bring more confusion with a toogle to a 'eraser blending mode'. It sounds to not fit the design.

In my opinion, a key to toogle back and forward to the last 'tool' used would do a better job :
== Scenario ==
* User set a B Brush to a pencil preset with jitter
* User set a E Eraser to a hard rounded circle.
* User press '/' to toogle back to his brush ; draw
* User press '/' to toggle back to his Eraser ; erase
etc...
yep, a sort of toggle history tool inspired of the one in Krita since 2.7.
