I've found that in practise, the window title can get very long due to it printing the whole path. Also, the window title offers little useful information when truncated heavily such as in the Alt+Tab switcher. Personally, I'd suggest using a format 'Chess - <basename>' so that 'Chess - ....' is always visible when truncated, although obviously this is a subjective design decision.

This would remove the full file path from the window title, and reorder the title so that 'Chess' is always visible.

I don't think this is different than changing any other translatable string?  If the translation you use is still maintained, it should be updated before 3.10 is released, and several already have been.  Please do correct me if I'm wrong: I'm not a i18n expert.
