Description John F. Kohler 2002-02-03 04:52:43 UTC
Package: panel
Version: 1.4.0.4
Severity:

>Synopsis: fatal error (segmentation fault)
>Class: sw-bug
System: Red Hat 7.2 (i386) GNOME workstation

>Description:
upon issuing "startx" the loading process began, and the cursor appeared. When the lighthouse scene appeared, all icon graphics appeared, including "panel" then the dialog box:

Application "panel" (process 1245) has crashed due to a fatal error (Segmentation fault)

>How-To-Repeat:
I simply went back to the terminal screen and a user prompt, and re-typed "startx" without going to a full re-boot of linux, which I'll try next.

After causing the failure for the 2nd time, I returned to the
Linux text screen, and from my user prompt, called for a reboot.

The system rebooted linux (my version is Red Hat 7.2 with XFree86
updates from the mirror sites), and got back to the text login
prompt. I logged in again at the user level. At the next prompt, I
entered
"startx" and got the full GNOME screen with the bottom screen panel.

I sure wish I could have included a dump of memory following the
failure. I just don't know how to do that.
