GNOME ships a set of default avatars but it looks like like they haven't really been touched since this commit:

Chrome OS / Chromium OS has a roughly similar set of 14 default avatars that look a bit nicer. They come in two sizes, 256x256 and 512x512. (The GNOME set is currently 96x96.)
