Description Alejandro HC 2013-06-18 17:55:35 UTC
In the classic GNOME session, it is impossible to create application launchers on the desktop.

Alacarte (working, but not fully supported), can modify the order of the application and the categories displayed in the application menu, but not to create application launchers in the desktop.

Is it possible that in the future the application menu had a small menu (right mouse button) to say "New Window", "add to desktop" (homologous to view applications menu)?

At least, it should allow to drag and drop existing desktop files from either activities overview or app-menu extension. Otherwise people need to copy&paste desktop files from /usr/share/applications

Thanks

The intent of GNOME classic is to ease the transition to GNOME 3 by providing a more familiar interface, not to replicate GNOME 2 feature-wise. GNOME 3 already offers alternatives to the app-menu for launching applications - favorites in the dash, quick access to frequently used apps in the app picker, search - so not having an easy way to add launchers to the desktop (which is covered by windows most of the time anyway) doesn't seem too much of a loss.

If there was a quick and easy way to do it, we'd still consider it, but it would require us to implement DND between the shell and applications (nautilus in particular), which is far from trivial. So I'm afraid this won't happen, closing as WONTFIX.
