The title mostly says it: the new register code doesn't show the balance column when opening an account with sub accounts. From what I can see this is different from the old register code.

I'm not using this functionality myself, but another bug report (not directly related to the register) show that others are: bug 682800.

If I remember when I started this, I looked at this and could not see the point of it. Can any body tell me what its for, as far as I can tell it gives a running balance for what ever the sort order is. This was easy in the old register as it was reloaded every time and the transactions were in order, not so in the new one.

This will require some thought !!

Perhaps this should be discussed on the list. I'm not sure if the devel or user list would be best. The user list has more people that actually use GnuCash so we have a better chance of finding someone that depends on the balance column in the subaccounts view. On the other hand that list is normally not bothered with development related questions. So I don't know really what's best here.
