Description Sindhu S 2013-05-08 18:55:29 UTC
Am currently running Fedora 18. I installed gnome-tweak-tool using yum via fedora repositories.

Label for "laptop lid, when closed will suspend even if there is an external moni..." does not fit in the default gnome-tweak-tool window.

I am not able to maximize the window either to see the full label text of the option am being provided.

G-t-t does not modify the label, it comes from the schema.

This bug should be against gnome-settings-daemon (power plugin, I think).

I think the key description comes from

org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power key:lid-close-suspend-with-external-monitor

The key should have a shorter description.

Hello, John

Could you please confirm so I could close this bug and file it where appropriate?

> The key should have a shorter description.

Or at least the labels in GNOME Tweak tool should be wrapped, no?

Errm, no. I don't think we're going to file a few dozens of bug reports against languages that use longer strings especially if there was no translator comment to use a short string whatever "short" means) - the correct fix would be line wrapping, as Sindhu already wrote.

Meh, its relative. I'm sure the g-t-t UI will look more like shit if I wrap all long strings, historically I have encouraged the schema to be corrected.

This has, from memory, caused many schemas to marked translatable and to have previously insane description strings made more sane. I thought those sort of improvements were beneficial for the platform....

Of course, now g-t-t is a bit more popular maybe I should just maintain translated descriptions of everything. But would that benefit the platform and be worth the translator burden?

All for wrapping one string?

While the key should have a shorter description in this case, lets not assume that the description would be the same length in all languages/using all fonts and allow it to be broken over multiple lines.

In this case, a poor sting shows an underlying problem from my point of view.

gnome-tweak-tool-font-size-eliding-problem.png

As you can see the problem even happens for English with only
slighly bigger font sizes. To see all text in this example, the
font sizes has to be made *very* small.

Please at least make the gnome-tweak-tool window resizable, then
resizing the window can be used as a workaround to see the full text.

As you can see in this screenshot, the eliding happens in practically
all languages (English, German, and Japanese shown in the screen shot)
and in *many* places. My screen shot only shows the “Typing” tab,
but it is almost everywhere.

It is not just one string, the problem occurs in many places.

Also obsoleted by new UI design
