panel crashes when starting gnome - redhat 7.2

Crashes repeatedly - each time a new PID. When I log out and back in, panel is not shown. Crashes again, when I type "panel" at a prompt. I've been able to "get around" this once, but persistence in keeping trying to start the panel everytime I log in. Don't know what was different. I am running a redhat 7.2 system, pretty much "outta the box"... I have not found erratta regarding gnome or the panel...
