since you guys aren't looking like you want to incorporate an 'autosave' why don't you have some type of 'projects recovery' option?? MANY programs that don't autosave have project recovery in case the program decides to crash... many of them just log an undo history... Ableton uses your undo history to recreate the project after a crash... now I think there sould AT LEAST be a recovery option if not an autosave

Autosave is bug #138373, saving the undo history is bug #148930 (whether this will be in XCF or as a separate file in another container format).

Both bugs have one thing in common: they're waiting for someone with time, skill and motivation to provide patches.

Crash recovery based on either of them, or both, is yet another task (for example, you'd want to help the user through the steps to recover, offer them rewind/playback capabilities, ...
