GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 699081
Search bar does not indicate that you can type
Last modified: 2013-05-04 15:48:40 UTC
When you open gnome-contacts you can type immediately to search through your contacts - you do not have to select the search field first. This is great, but there is no visible clue to that this is possible. In contrast to this, gnome shell uses the phrase "Type to search" in the search field, to inform the user of this ability. Alternatively one can place a blinking "|" at startup, just like what appears once you have selected the search field in gnome-contacts.

So, you're proposing to add "Type to search" as a placeholder text ?
Yes, and likely in grey, similar to the dash. To me that seems to be the best way to indicate that you can type instantly. Also because a user can recognize this placeholder text from the dash overview, we minimize communication issues. (In contrast, indicating this another way might confuse the user and make him question the lack of a pattern). yes.
Makes sense.
