Description greg 2013-03-29 22:30:11 UTC
I have been happily using Ubuntu 12.04 with Nautilus 3.4.2. I use the "Extra Pane" feature ALL THE TIME. So do my friends. I've just learned that ubuntu 13.04 will not have the "Extra Pane" feature because Gnome developers removed it?

Why? This was one of the best features of Nautilus.

Please bring back this feature in time for inclusion into Ubuntu 14.04. Please! This was a major mistake to remove this much beloved feature. It made navigation between different folders so much easier and more efficient to be able to keep one location open and use another pane to move to somewhere else without loosing your place in the other folder. It also makes copying, cutting, pasting so much less cumbersome.

Please bring this feature back!

It was not an easy decision. There was a lot of thought behind this decision, which was not taken in isolation, but was part of a larger progress effort by developers and designers.

"Sometimes is just not possible to add new functionality without first making some room. This doesn’t always mean you need to remove something. Nor does it always mean you should remove something. But sometimes you will. This is never done lightly. For Nautilus we spent a long time trying to figure out what is the minimum we’d need to do in order to accomplish the objectives discussed above. It is a very difficult trade off."

This is a quote from a blog post by Jon Mccann: http://blogs.gnome.org/mccann/2012/08/01/cross-cut/

That blog post is a very pleasant read which gives a lot of insight on what went into these changes, including the Extra Pane, and presents some great new features which you may not have found about yet.

Give the new nautilus a chance. I'm confident you will learn to love some of the new features that were made possible by letting the extra panel go.

Right, that is an important point and it was not forgotten when the decision to remove Extra Pane as we knew was made.

When Extra Pane was removed, a new feature was added. You will find two new handy actions in the context menu: "Copy to..." and "Move to...". These will let you copy/move files to somewhere else without losing your place in the other folder and without messing with cut-copy-paste.

Well, the "tap F3 to work on two folder side by side" may come back, in a slightly different, upgraded form: bug 681004

Thank you for your feedback. It is great to know that people care about the features that GNOME contributors share with the world. We hope that the features which were born from the ashes of extra pane prove to be even more helpful for your computing experience.

Thanks for this feedback and taking the time to point out the previous discussion. I see that a lot of thought went into the decision before deciding to get rid of the Extra Pane.

I will focus on getting used to using Nautilus' Ctrl+T to open a new tab in order to compensate for my not being able to use the Extra Pane feature anymore. I'm very thankful that Nautilus supports Ctrl+T (new Tab) and Ctrl+W (close Tab).

thanks.
