Originally reported at:

AIM users with the mobile status have an indicator in AIM, Pidgin, Trillian, and Kopete. Empathy is the only client that does not have one. Instead users are just shown as Available with no indicator at all.

This also happens on Ubuntu 13.04 with 3.8.x, and has happened for me on every version of Ubuntu for years now.

It was reported here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/empathy/+bug/1132048
But confirmed to be an upstream issue.
