GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 694677
Inaccesible or slowly accessible network bookmarks slow Nautilus considerably down
Last modified: 2013-06-11 11:28:54 UTC
I have a ssh server on my phone and use sftp to access the phone. However, much of the time the phone is not connected to the network. I like to have this address in my bookmarks as it is very handy when I need it. however, I noticed, that simply opening a folder with 4 other folders takes 2-3 seconds (on a ssd). When I remove the bookmark, everything is much quicker (generally under one second). I read (http://askubuntu.com/questions/147682/nautilus-is-very-slow?rq=1 ) that nautilus does some caching, which is slow or impossible over my network, so it is slowed down. If there is such caching, could it be done only on local files or something similar? (I am on 3.4 Nautilus in Ubuntu - if it is fixed in the current developement version, all the better, unfortunately, I am unable to install it at the moment).
Upon some more fiddling, it seems that maybe the number of bookmarks was the issue. Or maybe their non-existance. I had about 15 entries in my .gtk-bookmarks file, of ěhich 5 did not exist on my system. Generally reducing the number of bookmarks seem to speed things up. However, 15 bookmarks is not that many.
We were doing sync I/O on the bookmark locations until recently. This should be fixed now in 3.7. Can you try with a more recent version?
That is nice to hear. I will try it once (well, if:-)) Ubuntu 13.04 comes out, which should be in two months. Now I would have to compile from source which sounds scary.
Ubuntu 13.04 is available, but the nautilus version from official repositories is 3.6. However, some users install GNOME 3 PPA in order to get version 3.8. If this is your case, can you try again now? Thanks in advance.
Where does Nautilus get its bookmarks from in version 3.6 ? I modified my bookmarks afte filling this bug and it started to be fast (even with 3.6) but I still have my old .gtk-bookmarks file to try it with new version - when I copy to my home directory and reboot, the bookmarks are not changed, where do I need to place it?
(In reply to comment #5) The new file is ~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks
alright, so the old file is fast with Nautilus 3.6, no need to try 3.8 then, this is fixed, thanks.
Thanks for testing. I'm marking this as fixed. Please feel free to reopen if the problem reoccurs.
