Clean Load

one 6g part ntfs
one 3.?g part ext unformated

RedHat 7.2
seperate /boot, /, /usr, /var, home, /tmp
partition for each  

all on a 20g 5400rpm

i had almost all packages loaded (2.8g), but I understood that it shouldn't matter

Please try the latest (1.4.x) version of gnome-core and gnome-libs
from http://download.gnome.org/ Contact me if you need RPMS.
