Description mahrud 2013-01-23 03:56:54 UTC
The recursive search in nautilus is too slow, especially if you have some projects with many files and folders.

Previously one could type in the first few letters of a file or folder and select it or press enter to open it, but now it takes forever to finish the search.

Recursive search would be more useful if one could restrict it to few folders (e.g: Documents, Musics, etc.) instead of the whole home directory.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
This bug report isn't very useful because it doesn't describe the bug well. If you have time and can still reproduce the bug, please read http://bugzilla.gnome.org/bug-HOWTO.html and add a more useful description to this bug, by providing numbers (seconds) for specific testcases, hardware information (how fast is your computer), and distribution information (to know which tools are used here).
Currently, "too slow" is too vague to investigate, unfortunately.
Thanks in advance!

With Nautilus 3.8, search results will be incrementally loaded [bug 663242]. This means that you will get results from current folder as soon as possible, while the recursive search is still in progress.

With GNOME 3.8, you will be able to configure from Search Settings which directories to index with tracker.

I think these features will solve the issues reported and will make your searching experience efficient. Please feel free to reopen if you see the same problem in version 3.8. Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
