There should be a session management, with 2 aspects:
1) a "restore previous session at start" option in "preferences",
2) the possibility to save and name sessions manually, and then to restore them manually.
I really don't know why on earth this very useful feature has been removed.

Nautilus doesn't do any kind of user session management, it's not started with the session (unless you have desktop icons enabled, but that's completely transparent to the rest of the application).

I guess you're referring to something like bug 624536 though, which I think might be nice to have.
