Description Tassilo Horn 2013-01-03 07:51:53 UTC
Since I've upgraded to Gnome 3.6 from 3.4, emacs (compiled with GTK3) doesn't accept dead keys anymore. I use the German Dvorak layout as delivered with X11.

For example:

  - AltGr+< SPACE should insert ` but says "<dead-grave> is undefined"
  - AltGr+/ SPACE should insert ´ but says "<dead-acute> is undefined"

This does only happen if I start emacs from the gnome-shell dock (or applications menu in the overview) or from the Alt+F2 run dialog. When I start emacs from a gnome-terminal, dead keys work as expected.

I'm not sure, but maybe this thread on the netBSD list is related:

  http://mail-index.netbsd.org/pkgsrc-users/2012/04/29/msg016203.html

The suggested solution is in this message:

  http://mail-index.netbsd.org/pkgsrc-users/2012/05/12/msg016302.html

However, that changes an libX11 config file, so maybe that's not a gnome but an X11 problem?

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
