GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 690441
desktop image thumbnail resize blurry
Last modified: 2018-01-02 18:46:14 UTC
When I resize an image on the desktop larger, it becomes blurry because the thumbnail stretches. This was working properly not that long ago. Zooming in within a regular nautilus window works fine, but the desktop thumbnail resize does not. Icons (vector) resize fine, it's just images. I looked around and found the previous bugs about this, it seems like its supposed to be fixed by now. I think its a regression, unless there's some setting? I already tried removing the .thumbnails folder and restarting nautilus. Nautilus 3.6.3 on Ubuntu 12.10 x64 with gnome-shell 3.6.2 Old report of same issue: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48176 on launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1089449
I had a look at this, it seems that even though the code is set to load the original file when the thumbnail was stretched, it was still limited to a size of 256, which looked blurry when stretched to the largest size of 426px on my machine. In nautilus-directory-async.c:thumbnail_loader_size_prepared(), I replaced max_thumbnail_size = NAUTILUS_ICON_SIZE_LARGEST * cached_thumbnail_size / NAUTILUS_ICON_SIZE_STANDARD; with max_thumbnail_size = NAUTILUS_ICON_MAXIMUM_SIZE * cached_thumbnail_size / NAUTILUS_ICON_SIZE_STANDARD; Which tested successfully on my machine, although of course I do not know if this is the desired solution.
Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
